Whenever we are out and about shopping or simply just sitting at our local enjoying a weekend drink, we are often fascinated and amazed with all the different kinds of jewellery that people wear,
The shapes and colours, the fashions and trends - watching so many different cultures and designs pass us by day to day, it;s hard not to find inspiration and influence and also start seeing how things are moving toward the next big trend.
Everyday, ordinary people often inspires us.
And one style that is really hitting its stride right now and hijacking all avenues of the High Street is a throwback to a retro style of the late eighties and nineties.
Ladies and gentlemen, bright and chunky jewellery is coming back!
Personally speaking, We couldn't be happier.
To get involved and welcome an affordable, brilliant alternative to some of the eye-watering prices of the high street and the haut-couture outlets, we've been experimenting with laser cut acrylics. At the moment we've been outsourcing the pendants from local retailers and small business owners (because we find these little networking opportunities and supporting other indie businesses always so important) but this is all in preparation for when we finally get to have a go with the laser cutter ourselves.
Thankfully, we are fortunate enough to have access to one and we are already hard at work learning how to change some of our designs into reality by our own hand
, allowing us a great chance to bring a fully handmade, independent addition to our storefront.
These tiny cute charms above are now available on our etsy page.
Doll&Bone has a long and illustrious history of collaborating with Charitable causes - be it our classic Birmingham Children's Hospital line, where we teamed up with 16 illustrators and designers to create a line of shirts based on D&B founder Will Martins own son's ideas. Or our recent auctions where we split profit 50-50 to the winners charity of choice, to our upcoming work with Spina Bifida UK and Women Of STEM charity lines we are already working on.
Now, we are going to be collaborating again with the NSPCC for a series of Auctions and sales to raise money toward company designer Andi's parachute jump in September.
Andi - alongside four or five colleagues - will be jumping from a plane to raise money and awareness for the NSPCC and is aiming to raise a minimum of £400 by the 25th September.
The NSPCC is one of the UK's leading charities. 1 in 5 children in the UK have suffered abuse or neglect. That’s why, across the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man, they’re working to protect children today and prevent abuse from happening tomorrow.
The jump will take place on 28th September from Brackley Airfield in the UK, and we would love if our fans and followers could find it in their hearts to donate toward this brilliant cause.
To make matters worse (for Andi) he is also having to shed 8lbs in a weight loss program before the jump, and he is not a big fan of heights... So please donate generously wherever you can!
Andi says about the jump:
"It's been a bucket-list item for a while, jumping out of a plane, so when the opportunity came about I think I was the first person to put my name forward for the experience.
Ever since I was young though heights have not been my thing. I took a very long fall from a tree top when I was a child and ever since it's been a bit of a challenge to face great heights... So what better way to tackle this fear than to strap myself to another human and thrown myself out of a plane!!
I cannot wait to do this for such a magnificent cause and I am really looking forward to the experience!"
To join in and donate go Here - www.justgiving.com/fundraising/beingandi
and if you do donate or contribute toward the cause, know that Andi and D&B think you are a hero and appreciate you mightily!
Keep your eyes peeled for more updates as we get them, including some tally updates, and photos from the day itself.
Doll And Bone.
Doll&Bone are a company that has always been deeply immersed in the UK's alternative music world. From our founder Will Martin being a member of the West Midlands band Rise Of Athena - and his unwavering support of acts like wars (formerly of Spinefarm records, now with Wolf At Your Door records) or our general support of friends and contemporaries like November Plot who are busy making a big noise on the scene with their own brand of melodic post-hardcore.
Music has always been a big cornerstone in our philosophy as a company.
So it is we thought it might be great to share with you some bands who we think you should keep an eye on in 2019, and, who we are thinking we might reach out to work with in some capacity on collaborations this year.
First up - Lets look at our old buddies, wars.
Formed in 2015 wars exploded onto the scene from the ashes of Rugby hardcore stalwarts Lavondyss and former members of Eagles Born Vultures.
They quickly established themselves as one of the hottest properties in the UK rock scene - with glowing support from Rock Sound, Metal Hammer, Kerrang! and numerous other press publications, they also became mainstays on Radio One's rock-show with Daniel P Carter being a vocal cheerleader throughout the bands career.
With two EP's and an album to their name and several main rotation videos on Scuzz (R.I.P), Kerrang! and MTV - they were one of the breakthrough artists of the last five years.
Wars hail from Rugby, UK, are an incendiary live prospect and are presently busy at work on their second album, hot on the heels of their second EP - both to be released via Wolf AT Your Door Records who have a long history with the band in its present and former existences.
2019 is already showing it could be a huge year for the band.
Doll&Bone have enjoyed a long history with the band - and released the SCORN AND FIDELITY shirt in January in support of new single of the same name, and in line with the second EP's release.
If you haven't heard them yet, waste no more time and follow their links below.
Next up is the Stratford Upon Avon melodic post-hardcore heroes NOVEMBER PLOT.
Picking up with new impetus and energy after the dissolution of the UK underground legends JETPACK - November Plot are a dynamic, captivating and explosive live post-hardcore act from the sunny town of Stratford Upon Avon, Warwickshire.
Wearing their hearts of their sleeves and daring to deliver their music with a truly, fiercely independent attitude, they are one of the finest live acts presently doing the rounds in the UK>
Employing harmonic vocals in edgy, aggressive music - they share a style similar to Hundred Reasons, Alexisonfire and Thrice. Yet are entirely their own animal as well.
With years of experience as individuals and a group, the band are pushing the envelope in 2019 and are hard at work on their third EP.
Where they really come alive is in the live circuit, but their music videos have become brave statements of intent and proudly captures their amazing personality as well as their creative spirit. Doll&Bone are good friends and big fans - and cannot wait to see what they come out with next.
Warwickshire's LAST HOUNDS have been around for a relatively short time, but have already made a big impact in their lifetime.
With their blend of Hardcore, a touch of hip-hop sensibility and pure aggressive alternative rock they have carved a niche that allows them to stand out from the crowd on their own plateau - and elevates their live show into something truly awe-inspiring.
They are currently leading from the front within the West Midlands rock scene - garnering fans at every show, with every video release and every new single.
A LAST HOUNDS live show is a bombastic mix of violent moshing and almost orchestrated two-tone dancing, as they mesh genres and styles in an effortless blend of sound, that is truly and uniquely their own.
We adore them here at Doll&Bone - a classic example of doing the job right, they have the full package in image, music, visuals and attitude, and are only getting better and going from strength to strength with each new step.
Check out their social media pages, and make sure to watch all their videos - they truly are a powerhouse to be reckoned with.
Coventry's HIGH KNUCKS make music look easy... and it's slightly worrying, because watching them live is a truly exhausting - if amazing - experience...
When i say "EXHAUSTING EXPERIENCE" i mean this as a compliment.
They bound and bounce around the stage as though draining the life force of everyone in the room. They exist in a plain where the music provides them supernatural energy and effervescence and they never tire, slow down or show weakness.
A High Knucks show is like going twelve rounds with Tyson, where you get to lay a single punch that puts him on his knees, but still end up knocked out. You leave smiling, knowing you had the best time - but also bruised, battered and shattered - because the party does not stop from first song to last... and at the end, the band are a sweaty, dripping mess.... But look like they could go again and twice as hard.
Their sound is hard clash of classic punk, alternative rock and aggressive, but fun, lyrical invention. They share a stable in genre with bands like Pulled Apart By Horses, Idles, and Baddies - but are very much their own beast.
With brothers Tommy and Rev Taylor the beating heart of the band, they are a real proposition and will be making very big waves in 2019, you can mark our words.
We intend to do more of these blogs pointing out the best new acts out there and a second edition will be live soon - with four or five other bands we are presently listening too and think you should check out...
For now, we implore you to go and check out the bands above, download their music, follow their pages and support them any way you can...
Hey, tell them DOLL&BONE sent you.
Until next time.
Who doesn't love to support small businesses.
We try to shop via small businesses for stock and pleasure to keep the economy going and support the small trade community.
There are some real treats and beautifully quirky products hiding in plain sight.
BTW! We also use Etsy and you can find our shop (along with some of our favourite stores) HERE.
Etsy is a great site and really easy to use. No need to sign up, you can checkout as a guest. They accept cards and paypal - and our discount codes work at checkout as well!
While you are there, check out some other amazing little indie shops and get a gift to brighten up not only your day or the recipients day but the little shop-owner who spent time and effort to make a product. That money is going straight into their pockets and making their day - we can tell you that as fact!
Take it easy guys, have a great evening.
Shama & Andi.
